If you have ever dreamt of combining history, trekking adventure, and breathtaking mountain views, then Tikona Fort (also called Vitandgad) is the perfect weekend getaway near Pune and Lonavala. 📜 History of Tikona Fort Tikona Fort gets its name from its triangular shape – “Tikona” in Marathi literally means triangle. Standing tall at 3,500 feet in the Maval region of Pune district, this fort has witnessed countless battles and dynasties. It was once ruled by the Nizam Shahi dynasty, later captured by the Mughals, and finally came under the rule of the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1657. Shivaji Maharaj used Tikona as a strategic watchtower to monitor the entire Pawna Valley. Inside the fort, you will find: Mahadev Temple – a centuries-old Shiva temple. Caves and water tanks – used by soldiers for shelter and storage. Massive stone ramparts – showcasing Maratha architecture. Panoramic views of Pawna Lake, Lohagad, Visapur, Tung Fort – all visible from the top. 🥾 Trek Details – Tikona Fort Trek The trek to Tikona Fort is considered easy to moderate, making it ideal for beginners, families, and weekend trekkers. Base Village: Tikona Peth (approx. 20 km from Lonavala, 60 km from Pune, 120 km from Mumbai) Trek Distance: Around 2.5 km one way Trek Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours uphill, 1 hour downhill Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate (some steep rock-cut steps near the top) Best Time to Visit: Monsoon (July–September for lush greenery) and Winter (October–February for clear views) 🚗 How to Reach Tikona Fort From Pune: Take the Pune–Paud–Tikona Peth route (around 60 km, 1.5 hrs by car/bike). From Mumbai: Take Mumbai–Lonavala–Kamshet–Pawna route (120 km, 3 hrs by car). Local transport like ST buses are available till Paud, but the most convenient way is by bike or private car. Parking is available at the base village for a small fee (₹30–₹50). 🏞️ Things to See at Tikona Fort Once you climb to the top, the views will leave you breathless. Best to start trek early morning (7–8 AM) to avoid heat. 🎥 My Experience The trek started from Tikona Peth village, with lush green fields on both sides. As I walked through narrow trails, I could hear the sound of birds and fresh mountain breeze. Halfway up, I reached caves carved into the mountain where ancient soldiers once rested. The climb got steeper, with high rock-cut steps leading to the fort entrance. But the moment I reached the top – wow! The breathtaking 360° view of Pawna Lake, Lohagad, Visapur, Tung, and the Sahyadris made the entire trek worthwhile. I also visited the Mahadev Temple, where locals still come to worship. Sitting on the fort walls, I felt like I was back in the time of Shivaji Maharaj, imagining soldiers guarding this mighty fort. 🗓️ Best Time to Visit Tikona Fort Monsoon (July–September): Greenery, waterfalls, clouds. (But steps get slippery – be cautious.) Winter (October–February): Cool weather, clear views, perfect for camping nearby.
